Stay safe from job scams

Nobody legitimate charges you to apply for a job. If a posting asks for money, it is a scam โ€” every time, without exception.

The signs

They ask for a deposit, a registration fee or an "admin fee" before an interview.

The pay is far above the market rate for the role, and they say no experience is needed.

They want your identity card or bank details over WhatsApp before you have met anyone.

The company has no registration number, or the number does not match the company name when you check it on the SSM website.

They ask you to install an app or click a link to "register" outside the official process.

The interview happens only over text, with someone who will not take a call or meet in person.

What to do

Check the company's SSM registration yourself at ssmservices.com. It costs a few ringgit and takes two minutes.

Search the company name plus the word "scam" and look at what comes back.

Never send money. Never send a photo of your identity card before you have a signed offer.

Report the posting here. Reports are read by a person, and a posting with several reports moves to the front of the queue.

If you have already paid

Report it to the police and to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission. Keep screenshots of everything, including the bank transfer.

Tell your bank immediately. A transfer reported within hours sometimes gets frozen; one reported days later rarely does.

Report the posting here as well, so it is taken down before the next person sees it.

What we do about it

Every employer is checked against the SSM register before getting a verified badge.

We scan postings for the language scams use โ€” deposits, fees, requests for identity documents โ€” and flag them for a person to read.

A banned account's email and domain go on a blacklist, so the same operator cannot simply sign up again.
